I love maths and poker is my game.Specially video poker
Video poker games in Atlantic City work the exact same way as VP games in Las Vegas. One of the states that does have different VP games, however, is New York. At the casinos at pari-mutuels in NY the cards in the VP games are not dealt randomly. Instead, it is like you are playing a scratch-off lottery ticket with a pre-determined number of winners and losers. Therefore, the pay table you see shown in the front of the VP machine is meaningless because skill is not a factor when playing.
Is it true that the video poker machines in Atlantic City use a different random generator mechanism and are thus inferior to the ones in Vegas? I keep hearing the AC video poker machines are different than the Vegas ones somehow due to gaming laws.
With slot machines the best thing a player can do is stop playing them and switch to video poker. The returns are several percentage points higher, plus you can learn to read a VP paytable and know exactly what the machine is programmed to pay back. With casino games based purely on luck the best a player can hope to do is get lucky and win. I think players know the house will win in the long run but it’s good if they can avoid bad bets to make their bankroll last longer and have more fun.
@americancasinoguide I did not wanted to say otherwise, nor dispute the realty factor in your vids.
I work in this field for almost a decade and mostly agree with you.
But even with all the charts and tips and hints beside the machine… there is and will always be the the “human factors”. Most noticeable being “greed”.
That’s the “pit” in witch most fall. players and organizers.
Next being the “glitter”. Many could forget about the numbers and go for the sparking colors
Well, it would be foolish of you to think that people can’t learn something about how the machines work and how to get more value for their money. People do want to know about these subjects and, unfortunately, there are many bad sources for this information on the Internet. My videos are factually correct and they do not tell you that you will get rich by gambling in casinos. They do, however, give correct information on how the games work and how to play them with the best possible strategies.
Mark my words: Want to get rich from slots and video games?
)
There is only one true and sure way:
Open a big casino. (or more)
Other ways of making (some) money from slot machines would be:
-Writing a book (or more) about them.
-Selling charts and software about them.
-…and, where legally possible, make commercials for them. (Big casino owners like advertising)
Cheers.
You are a smart gambler. Unfortunately, many players never take the time to learn which rules are best and the proper strategies for those games. Many think it is all luck. Some games are indeed all luck, but even in those games there are both good and bad bets. An example would be craps where a pass line bet has a casino advantage of around 1.4% while the any seven bet has a 16.7% advantage.
They most likely use a RNG for online poker games, but I can’t say so with 100% certainty. In video poker the cards are constantly being shuffled until you hit the deal button. Then, they are still being shuffled until you hit the draw button. I know this is how it is done at IGT, the world’s largest maker of slot machines, because I interviewed their chief engineer and he told me so. Other manufacturers probably do it the same way, but I am not 100% sure.
I want to point out one thing about bad casino games: those like 6/5 blackajck, bad video poker games, 75% payback slots, american roulette yah the one with two 0`s.. etc. My question is why those games still exists with all this gambling education info running free on the internet, books and everywhere ? Or id better ask why the lot of people are still so dumb to play them ? I would not play any of those bad games not even for free, i have better options (with similar games) to entertain me !
do they use a rng for this like online poker. is the deck set when your start of is it reshuffled in beetween draws?
The double-up feature? On some machines, after you have a wiining video poker hand., you are then given the option to do a double or nothing bet. Five cards appear on the screen with the first one face up and the other four face down. You have to choose from the four face down cards one card. If it’s higher than the face-up card, your win is doulbed. If it’s lower, your win is lost. If it’s the same value, it’s a tie. The casino has no mathematical advantage on this game.
and how do you do when the mashine accept bets?, i mean, there are some video poker mashines that after you make whatever winning combinations then you could raise the bet until you get a lower card than the betting card. in this case, is it a pattern that i must have to follow or something in order to have much probability to get the higher card and win more money?
So, in other words, even with the %99+ payout (assuming you can’t find a positive EV machine) you could net a profit due to comps. I think. Combining playing the 99% machines and the positive machines (when available) should be about break even, but the comps have a dollar value. Therefore, if the comps add up to more dollars than the gas costs you, you can have fun at a casino without losing money!
Sweet.
And in non-gambling terms a 99.5% return means your losing .05% on average if you play perfect. Which means skill comes into effect when talking about how much money you lose. If you want to take time to learn about cards and poker, play against PEOPLE and not a machine. Also remember that when somebody sits down at a video poker machine and loses a bunch of money, it would not influence how much you win/lose. the odds stay the same, thats why they like video poker machines.
I’ve listened to Steve’s podcast for years. He always gives sound advice, based on the mathematical probability, not speculation or rumor.
Great job on this video.
For each one coin reduction on the pay table for a Jacks or Better game the effect is to reduce the overall payback by about 1.1%. When you go back to print out the 8/5 strategy, take a look at the link for “Video Poker Paytables” click on that and you will see a listing of various pay tables and how changes affect the payback percentages. Be sure to look at the Deuces Wild games. When the only change is that the payback for four-of-a-kind is reduced from five to four the % reduction is huge.
@americancasinoguide Ah thanks, i wasn’t sure how much it brought the odds down 97.3 is higher then i thought, and still makes it far better then the regular slots.
I’ll get the guide for 8/5 next time i go.
Actually, besides the 9/6 strategy chart, there is also an 8/5 strategy chart on our web site. Just go back and print it out. Of course, 8/5 is not a very good game to play since it only returns 97.3% rather than 99.5%. However, if you want to play it, at least you will have the correct strategy.
I went to the site he said, printed out their stategy guide and went to test it out at the local casino.
Unfortunately found out the local casino only offers 8-5 machines not 9-6.. Still better odds then your regular slots but i was slightly bummed and didn’t play to much.
If they offered 5 dollar blackjack tables i would definately do that instead, but the table minnimum is 15, since they have no competition in the area they can pretty much do whatever they want.
good information thanks for posting the video.
Excuse me, but you started the insults by saying that my information was crap. Once again, you show your ignorance by saying that there is an 80% fee on the money the casinos make. What does that mean and who is charging that fee? The tax in Nevada is 6.75% on gross gaming revenue. Why don’t you research this information before you state it incorrectly?
@americancasinoguide Thx for insulting me. Whatever. You know that there is an 80% fee on the money the casinos make? How do you think they are still able to build those palaces in Las Vegas? Do you really want to sell this lies that those machines are based on FAIR statistics? And btw. of course you are trying to attract people to this video. “Video Poker- HOW TO WIN” < – read your own titles plz. Still thanks that you even answered my comment. impressive but still wrong
The only one who is full of crap is you. This video is factually correct and you have no idea what you are talking about. Take some time to do research. Go to the web sites of gaming regulators in various states and read the regulations that govern video poker. You will see that I am right and you are wrong. I do not tell anyone that they will get rich playing video poker, nor do I profess to have some secret system to “beat” the game. I simply explain how it works and how to be a better player.

Is it true that the video poker machines in Atlantic City are not based on true random cards like the Vegas one, but are more of a slot machine type winner designation?
Michael Shackleford is brilliant!
Great video, this really enlightened me on the subject of Video Poker. Maybe now I’ll do better at it, equipped with the knowledge and advice I received from this video.
Thanks Steve.
I don’t know how VP games in Macau are operated. The information in this video applies to U.S. games in major gaming states such as Nevada and New Jersey. Keep in mind that even in the U.S. there are some video poker machines that do not act in this manner. Exceptions are Class II games which are based on bingo. Also, in New York the video poker games are not random. The results are pre-determined and it is like paying a scratch-off lottery ticket. See americancasinoguide com for more details.
What about playing in Macau? Macau gaming turnover is now bigger than that of Vegas! And the poker games are so juicy…
